Milberg (formerly Milberg Weiss) has made its reputation -- and drawn its share of controversy -- representing plaintiffs in class-action lawsuits against some leading corporations. It also practices in areas such as antitrust, consumer protection, and mass torts. The firm has more than 65 lawyers in offices in Los Angeles, New York, Tampa, and Detroit. In June 2008 Milberg agreed to pay a $75 million fine in exchange for the dismissal of a 2006 indictment in which federal prosecutors alleged the firm paid kickbacks to get people to serve as plaintiffs. Earlier in 2008, firm co-founder Melvyn Weiss pleaded guilty to a related conspiracy charge and resigned from the firm, which changed its name to Milberg.
